The scam is simple: many cheap chargers lie about their wattage. They claim 65W but can only sustain about 30W before overheating and throttling down. They claim “GaN” (gallium nitride — a newer, more efficient semiconductor material) but use old silicon components in a slightly smaller case. They claim safety certifications they don’t actually have. And because most people don’t own a USB power meter, they never find out.
I do own a USB power meter now, because I am exactly the kind of person who buys 12 chargers to prove a point. Here’s what the testing revealed.
The Test Results
I’m not going to name the terrible chargers (I don’t want to get sued), but here’s the pattern:

What to Actually Look For
Forget wattage claims and marketing buzzwords. Here’s what actually matters:
- GaN is real and it’s worth paying for. Gallium nitride chargers are significantly smaller, cooler, and more efficient than traditional silicon chargers. A 65W GaN charger is about the size of a deck of cards. A 65W silicon charger is about the size of a deck of cards if the deck of cards had been eating well. The difference is immediately visible — if a charger claims to be GaN but is as large as a traditional brick, it’s lying.
- Look for USB-IF certification. The USB Implementers Forum certifies chargers that meet their standards for safety and performance. A certified charger will have the USB-IF logo and a certification number. It’s not a guarantee of quality, but it filters out the worst offenders.
- UL or ETL certification is non-negotiable. These are independent safety testing labs. If a charger doesn’t have a legitimate UL or ETL mark (and you can verify it on their websites), don’t plug it into anything you care about.
- Single-port chargers are more reliable than multi-port ones at the same price. A $30 single-port 65W charger will generally perform better than a $30 multi-port charger that splits 65W across three ports. The multi-port circuitry adds cost, which means corners get cut elsewhere.
