We started BarginBuy in 2025 because we were tired of buying things based on glowing reviews that turned out to be fake, paid-for, or written by someone who clearly never touched the product.

You know the kind of review we’re talking about. The one that says “This product exceeded my expectations!” on seventeen different coffee makers. The one that summarizes the Amazon product description in slightly different words. The one that was obviously generated by AI, or written by someone in a content farm who got paid $12 to review a vacuum cleaner they’ve never seen in person.

We wanted something different. We wanted a site where every recommendation came from someone who actually bought the thing, used the thing, and had real opinions about the thing — including the stuff that didn’t work, the annoyances you only discover after a month of use, and the features that look great in marketing photos but are useless in real life.

So we built it.

How We Test

Every product we recommend goes through the same process:

We buy it with our own money. We don’t accept free review units from manufacturers. We don’t do sponsored reviews. If a company sends us something, we decline. This is more expensive for us, but it means our recommendations aren’t influenced by anyone’s marketing department.

We test it for at least two weeks. Not an hour. Not “we took it out of the box and it seemed fine.” We use products the way you would — in a real house, with real messes, real deadlines, real mornings where the coffee maker needs to work the first time because there is no backup plan.

We compare it to the alternatives. We don’t just tell you if something is good. We tell you if something else is better for the money, or if the $200 version is actually worth the extra $150 over the $50 version. Side-by-side comparison is the only way to know what you’re actually getting for your money.

We write like humans. You’ll notice our reviews don’t read like a Wikipedia article. We include the stuff that actually matters — the sound the robot vacuum makes when it gets stuck, the way the coffee carafe is annoying to clean, the fact that a toothbrush head is weirdly expensive to replace. These are the details you need to make a real decision, and they’re exactly the details that AI-generated reviews leave out.

How We Make Money

BarginBuy earns money through affiliate commissions. When you click a link on our site and buy something, we may earn a small percentage of the sale — at no extra cost to you. We participate in the Amazon Associates program and several other affiliate networks.

Here’s what you need to know about our affiliate relationships:

They don’t affect our recommendations. We don’t get paid more for recommending one product over another within the same category. Our picks are based on testing, not commission rates. If we recommend something, it’s because we genuinely think it’s the best option — not because the affiliate payout is higher.

We don’t do paid placements. No manufacturer can pay us to be featured, ranked higher, or get a better review. If a company approaches us about a paid promotion, we say no. This is a hard rule, not a guideline.

We tell you when we’re using affiliate links. Every page with affiliate links includes a disclosure at the top. We also label individual links so you always know when a purchase supports our work.

The reality is: running a site like this costs money. We buy all our own test products, we spend dozens of hours on each review, and we don’t run ads that track you around the internet. Affiliate commissions are how we keep the lights on without compromising our editorial independence.

Who We Are

BarginBuy is run by three people who share a belief that the internet doesn’t need another content farm. We work from a small office in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by a rotating collection of products we’re testing. (Our spouses are very patient.)

Alex Morgan handles most of our tech and personal care reviews. Before BarginBuy, Alex spent a decade as a software engineer and has the kind of brain that can’t let go of a question until it’s been thoroughly researched. This is great for our reviews and occasionally exhausting for everyone else.

Rachel Kim covers kitchen, home, and parenting gear. She’s the one who will cook the same meal seven times to test seven different pans, and she has strong opinions about coffee makers. Rachel previously worked in product development at a cookware company, which is why our kitchen reviews go into detail that most sites miss.

Jordan Taylor handles our home and cleaning coverage — robot vacuums, air purifiers, and anything that promises to make your house cleaner with less effort. Jordan has two dogs, one cat, a toddler, and a house that generates an astonishing amount of mess, which makes him uniquely qualified to test cleaning products.
